The last course you attended

“UKSCA Weight Lifting for Sports Performance” – being a physiotherapist with a personal interest in sports and high level rehabilitation, this course allowed me to improve my technical skills with olympic lifts and clinical reasoning around developing conditioning resistance training programmes.

The most challenging case to treat

Every challenge is a lesson. Luckily, in my experience I have had the opportunity to encounter many across both adult and paediatric population with musculoskeletal issues. When treating young children the most common challenge was involving family in the treatment to increase patients’ compliance. In this age group exercise should be all about fun! Patients presenting with sport related injuries often wish to return to their sport as soon as possible. In this population I believe appropriate treatment planning and goal setting is key to staying motivated and noticing small improvements over the rehab period.

What makes a good physiotherapist

A good physiotherapist is a good communicator. It is essential to look at the patient beyond their injury and understand their wishes, beliefs and

expectations. Being able to modify and tailor the treatment plan for individualised needs is fundamental to achieving a successful outcome. Passion for learning and working with people are key to providing best quality of care.

What is the most common advise you give to your patients?

Learn to listen to your body. It will tell you how much you should push yourself. This will allow you to work at appropriate intensity and set an good pace for your rehab. Also: quality over quantity! Correct form at a controlled pace is far more beneficial than endless repetitions or heavy load lifted with poor technique.
