The last course you attended?

As a physiotherapist involved in professional rugby, staying up-to-date with the latest research and best practices is crucial. Recently, I attended the “Headcase Concussion Awareness Management” course. This program dived into the complexities of concussion, its diagnosis, management, and prevention. By gaining a deeper understanding of the potential long-term consequences of head injuries, I am better equipped to safeguard the well-being of rugby players. This course reinforces the importance of early identification, appropriate treatment, and gradual return-to-play protocols.

The most challenging injury you have treated

During my physiotherapy placement in the frailty unit, I encountered a particularly challenging case involving a geriatric patient. While conducting a routine assessment, I noticed subtle signs of a second fracture on the patient’s limb, in addition to the one already diagnosed by the medical team. Recognizing the potential implications of this oversight, I promptly alerted the ward doctor, who immediately ordered a follow-up X-ray, which confirmed my suspicion. This experience underscored the importance of meticulous assessment and critical thinking in physiotherapy practice, even in seemingly straightforward cases.

What makes a good physiotherapist?

A good physiotherapist is a blend of critical thinking and compassionate care. Physiotherapists can diagnose and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions. Strong communication skills are essential for building rapport with patients and effectively explaining treatment plans. Additionally, a good physiotherapist is empathetic, patient, and motivational, creating a positive and supportive environment for recovery. Their dedication to continuous learning ensures they stay up-to-date with the latest evidence-based practices, providing their patients with the most effective care.

The advice you give most to patients

Exercise, stress management, and healthy habitS are the cornerstone of overall health, offering numerous benefits beyond physical fitness. Combined, these can help managing weight, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, improve mental health, and boost energy levels. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a yoga class, or a gym workout, finding activities you enjoy and can stick to is key to enhance quality of life.
